LESSONS: TEN THINGS TO THINK ABOUT

AUTHENTICITY

Honesty and Sincerity in Character Acting

Authenticity in animation means characters behave in ways that are true to who they are. A shy character would never suddenly jump front and center to perform a bold dance. An angry character would not respond with warmth or sympathy unless there is a clear story-driven reason for that shift.

A classic example of honesty in character acting is Bugs Bunny. Bugs is clever, confident, and always in control. Making Bugs look stupid or inept breaks the illusion. Even when he is losing, he appears to be winning. His intelligence and self-awareness are central to who he is.

In contrast, Daffy Duck operates on an entirely different frequency. Daffy is wacky, hyper, insecure, and high-strung. He overreacts to everything. He is never casual or unbothered by events in the story. Treating Daffy with the same cool restraint as Bugs would feel false and immediately weaken the performance.

When characters act against their core nature or beliefs without proper motivation, the performance collapses. The audience feels it instantly. The acting becomes shallow, and the story loses credibility.

A great demonstration of commitment to character can be found in the blooper reels from A Bug’s Life. Even in playful, non-canonical moments, the characters remain honest to who they are. The humor works because the performances stay grounded in character truth.

One useful way to find honesty in your acting choices is to imagine your character as a real person you know. Think of them as a friend. If you picture going out for drinks with your character, you begin to understand how they speak, react, and respond under pressure. This mental exercise helps clarify what feels right and what feels false.

Authenticity can also be described as sincerity in acting choices. When characters behave honestly, their performances become believable, engaging, and emotionally resonant. The audience may not consciously analyze why it works, but they always feel when it does.
